Intern Position - NYCIF

Job Title: Translational Research Fund Intern
Location: New York City
Stipend: Unpaid Internship
Dates of Positions: Flexible
Time Commitment: 6 months minimum – 12 months maximum; approximately 10-15 hours per week; you will be required to come into the office at least once a week to check in.

Summary of Position:

The New York City Investment Fund (NYCIF) has established the Translational Research Funding Initiative (TRF), a new initiative to provide funding for late-state research at non-profit universities and research institutions located within New York City. The focus is technology and research that have advanced beyond the point where an academic institution or the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is prepared to fund, but before the venture community is interested in committing dollars. The goal of the TRF is to increase and accelerate the number of quality bioscience companies spinning out of the city’s academic sector.

NYCIF is looking for 2 interns with a strong scientific background to work on TRF related projects, including assisting with the review of projects submitted for potential investment. Our ideal candidates are Ph.D. level scientists, who are interested in working in the biotechnology industry.

The Investment Fund has raised over $100 million to mobilize the city's world financial and business leaders to help build a stronger and more diversified local economy. It has built a network of top experts from the investment and corporate communities who help identify and support New York City's most promising entrepreneurs in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. The Fund is governed by a Board of Directors co-chaired by Russell L. Carson, General Partner of Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe; and Richard M. Cashin, Managing Partner of One Equity Partners.

The Investment Fund is the investment and the economic development arm of the Partnership for New York City (www.pfnyc.org), the city's leading business organization. One of NYCIF’s key priorities is supporting the development of a vibrant commercial bioscience industry in the city in order to help diversify the local economy and spur job growth in a new sector. With the first phase of the East River Science Park opening at the beginning of 2010, the city will now have badly-needed laboratory and office space for commercial companies. The TRF addresses a critical gap in funding available to commercialize biomedical technology out of NYC’s academic institutions. The goal of this TRF funding is to create over time a larger pipeline of commercial spin outs from NYC’s biomedical research institutions, most of which will ideally remain in New York City.

Duties:


 Assist with reviewing of projects submitted for potential funding, including conducting scientific due diligence on projects, identifying other research in the field, conducting searches on PubMed and USPTO sites, and outlining your findings in writing
 Conduct market research on therapeutic areas of interest
 Create databases of top researchers by projects at NYC universities
 Create templates and databases to facilitate review and project metrics, as needed
 Conduct searches and keep apprised on faculty research at NYC universities
 Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements /qualifications:
 A basic understanding of the research institutions and universities in NYC
 Strong science background, with an interest in the business side of science
 Willingness to work on a flexible schedule and to conduct research
 Strong computer experience, especially MS excel
 Well developed organization skills with a solid orientation to detail
 A self-starter with a strong desire to learn
 Good written and verbal skills.
