We'll be having our first meetup presenation at our next meeting, thanks to Scott Alexander!

Scott Alexander is a Partner at Avelient, an IT Solutions Provider specializing in the Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology industries. Scott?s areas of expertise are Regulatory Affairs and Pharmacovigilance.

His big question for the evening:

Produce, Buy or License? The Big Question for Big Pharma
In today?s pharmaceutical market, the Big Pharmas are often faced with a difficult strategic question: produce new products internally, buy new products through acquisitions or generate revenue by partnering and licensing? At the next New York Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Meetup on 9/17/2007, Scott Alexander will present the industry drift toward licensing & acquisitions and the reasons for this trend.

The meetup will take place in a meeting room at the Galway Hooker, an Irish pub where you can enjoy a drink and good food while you listen to Scott talk. This will be my first time there, but I've heard good things about it from other people, so please, join us and let us know what you think!

We will have opportunities for networking after the event, so bring your business cards!

If you are interested in making your own presentation, we still have room for another speaker! Please submit your idea to one of the organizers for the group and prepare a 5-10 minute presentation for the group. Be sure to indicate any needs you might have, such as a projector or laptop, and we'll try to accomodate you as best we can.

UPDATE July 23rd: DATE, EVENT CHANGED!

Due to scheduling conflicts, we will not be able to have the seminar as planned in August. The seminar has been moved to September, and a date and location will be announced after the next meetup.

We will therefore be moving the meetup to Hoboken on August 19th, 2007, as per our normal schedule (the last meetup was in New York).

For this Meetup, I'd like everyone to pick a piece of Pharmaceutical or Biotech news that occurs between now and then and think about its implications in your line of work, your family life, or yourself! If you cannot, please think about what it is about Pharmaceuticals or Biotechnology made you want to get into this field in the first place, and how you think this group could better serve you to nurture that interest!

I look forward to seeing you all, and hope you're having a great summer!

ORIGINAL MESSAGE, PLEASE DISREGARD:
------------------------
We are going to attempt to organize a seminar for our next meeting and cover topics about which you might be interested in learning more! A couple of good topics were suggested during our meeting!

If you're interested in making a small seminar a success for our group, please email me with suggestions for topics, paired with people you might like to hear discuss those topcis. Ideally, I'd love to bring in Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, but unfortunateliy our group may not be large enough to command an audience with her! Therefore, in your suggestions keep it realistic and expect an audience of about 15-20 people for the talk.

We will likely be scheduling the event for a weeknight, but I will be posting a poll to determine whether to hold the event in New York or New Jersey. Your participation is key to bringing this seminar to a location that's convenient for you! And if it doesn't work out, don't worry; with success I'm hoping it won't be the last seminar we organize.

I'll be posting details of the presentation here, and we'll set up time for a Q&A period and a networking period, so people can not only focus on the topic up for discussion, but also engage in conversation with others in the group who may be as interested in your opinion as the speaker's!

Any response should be sent to me no later than July 13th so that I can start putting together the event and give our speaker ample warning. Keep your eye on our site and let me know if you have any comments or suggestions to make this a great event!

Please keep an eye out for emails and check back on the site often! We'll be updating both the DATE and the LOCATION as per the speaker's schedule!

A lively group contributed to a great meetup in June. Panera Bread seems to be a great place for a social meetup, and will definitely remain on our list as a location for the future!

For our next meetup, which will return to New York City, I'm looking for people you'd like to hear as a speaker at our meetups. I'm looking specifically for someone who can provoke some good discussion among the group because of their expertise and unique perspective on the Pharma or Biotech industries. We will have a few guest bloggers at the Avelient Bio Pharm Blog that you can read about, or if there's someone in particular you'd like to hear that we haven't brought up yet, please let me know!

Peter, Roman, Georgette and Evelyn, thanks for joining me at our last meetup, I felt you all provided some thoughtful insight into our discussion and look forward to the kinds of thoughts you'll have to share in the future.

In the meantime, I hope you're all enjoying the beautiful weather this late spring/early summer, and I look forward to hearing from you all again soon!

UPDATE 5/30

Hi everyone! We've picked Panera Bread in Hoboken for our next meetup on Sunday at 11:45. If you don't think you'll be able to make it, please update your RSVP. Otherwise I look forward to seeing you there!

END UPDATE 5/30

Some great discussion took place in our last meetup. I think it was interesting to listen to the varying opinions of people from the different facets of the pharmaceutical industry such as public relations, customer relationship management, technology, research and adverse events reporting and how those opinions interrelate given people's backgrounds. Thanks to all of you from bringing your opinions to the table!
For the next meetup, we're asking that everyone provide a 5-minute highlight on something interesting that you're working on. What we're after is to expand how the members of our group are interconnected, and how those different areas might shape your views of the industry. We're hoping that this, in turn, will encourage some discussion!

We'll additionally be listening for any news developments in the pharmaceutical industry over the next month that you'd like to discuss. The more topics the merrier!

Because the concensus seems to be that weekends work for you, our next meetup will be scheduled for Sunday, June 3rd in Hoboken. Exactly where it will be has yet to be determined, but I'm most certainly open to suggestions.

I look forward to seeing you again soon, have a great month, and feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions!

PLEASE NOTE: Due to scheduling conflicts and family issues with the organizers, this meetup has been rescheduled.

The new date, as noted, is May 6th 2007 at 12pm.

After a successful first meetup, we're looking forward to the next! In an effort to keep all the members interested and active in the group, we're going to be changing both the location and the venue for the next meetup, so keep an eye out for our next location. Please, bring your thoughts and ideas!

Topics for the next meetup:

1) How do you think the Pharmaceutical industry is going to change over the next 5 years? Recent changes have seen the large pharmaceutical companies having to deal with expiring patents and lawsuits. Additionally, the "blockbuster" drugs are being viewed with more scrutiny by the FDA -- how will this change the landscape of the industry?

2) Biotech firms are experiencing faster growth than ever before. Do you see these companies as competition to or compliements of the pharmaceutical companies of the world?

3) April 22nd, the tentative date for our next meetup is Earth Day. How do you think Pharmas and Biotechs contribute to a better, cleaner planet?

I invite you to bring your own topics to this meeting!

This is our first meetup! Come and join us to meet other people in the area interested in discussing topics surrounding the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industry! This meeting will be more of an introduction to the new members of the group, and we will be discussing each person's thoughts on what they'd like this group to be. Please bring ideas for topics you might be interested in, and bring your enthusiasm to share with your peers!

UPDATE 3/14: We currently have 2 tables reserved in the downstairs bar area. I'll be there early, so for those of you who don't know me look for the guy with the pink shirt. I look forward to meeting you!
